WHO Member States Acknowledge Argentina’s Plan to Leave Organization
During the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, delegates reviewed Argentina’s decision to follow the United States in announcing its departure from the organization.
After discussing several proposals related to the issue, member states approved a compromise resolution by consensus.
The assembly officially “noted” the communication sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 17, 2025, informing him that Argentina would withdraw from the WHO, with the move taking effect one year after the letter’s receipt.
The adopted resolution stated that the organization would continue to welcome “the Argentine Republic's full co-operation,” but concluded that no additional measures were necessary at this stage.
Norway and Paraguay reportedly played leading roles in shaping the compromise agreement.
Argentina contributes a relatively small share to the WHO budget, with its membership dues for 2024 and 2025 amounting to roughly $4.1 million annually.
A report issued earlier this year by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recalled that several countries, including the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria, had previously announced withdrawals from the organization in 1949 and 1950.
When those countries later resumed participation, the assembly agreed they would make a “token payment” covering the period during which their memberships had been inactive.
